Composite and PVC deck boards move as temperatures change. The amount and direction of movement vary by product, board length, temperature at installation and fastening system, which is why a single universal gap is not the right answer.

Why deck-board gaps matter

Correct spacing gives boards room for expected movement, helps water and debris pass through the surface and keeps the finished deck looking intentional. Gaps that are too tight can create problems when boards expand; excessive gaps can look poor and make small objects easier to lose between boards.

There is no one gap for every brand

Always use the current installation guide for the exact manufacturer and product line. Requirements can differ between capped composite and PVC products and can also change based on installation temperature. Do not copy spacing from a different brand simply because the boards look similar.

Butt joints need special attention

End-to-end board joints can be more noticeable as temperatures change. On many layouts, a planned breaker board can create a cleaner design than relying on multiple butt joints. See our picture framing and breaker board guide for design considerations.

Fasteners affect spacing too

Many hidden-fastener systems establish side-to-side spacing as they are installed, but that does not eliminate the need to follow the manufacturer’s end-gap and perimeter requirements. Compare fastening approaches in our hidden fasteners vs. face screws guide.

Installer checklist

  • Confirm the exact board line, not just the brand.
  • Read the current manufacturer installation guide.
  • Account for installation temperature.
  • Plan breaker boards and borders before framing is complete.
  • Use the specified fastener system and spacing.
  • Recheck requirements around fixed objects and structures.

Good decking installation starts below the surface too. Read our joist spacing guide before finalizing the frame.
