CAMO ClipDRIVE Review: Is the Stand-Up Deck Fastening Tool Worth It?

A deck contractor’s CAMO ClipDRIVE review covering how the stand-up fastening tool works with CAMO Universal Deck Clips, where it saves time, and who needs it.

Contractor note: I use CAMO tools on deck projects, and ClipDRIVE is the tool in the system that changes the physical workflow the most. Instead of kneeling at every joist to fasten hidden clips, it lets you work from a standing position.

Evaluation basis

When this article says a product was installed, used on jobs or tested, that statement refers to firsthand experience. If we do not explicitly make one of those claims, the product-specific evaluation is research-based using current manufacturer documentation, installation requirements, warranty terms and contractor context.

What we compare: use-case fit, installation, durability and maintenance, warranty and support, availability and value.

Quick verdict

If you install grooved composite or PVC decking regularly, CAMO ClipDRIVE can make sense because it turns repetitive clip fastening into a standing operation. It is not a universal screw gun and it is not meant for every hidden fastener on the market. It is a dedicated tool for CAMO Universal Deck Clips.

How ClipDRIVE works

ClipDRIVE attaches to a drill and positions the driver over CAMO Universal Deck Clips. CAMO currently lists a height-adjustable handle, a weighted nose that helps target the screw head and an included T-15 driver bit. The tool is designed for grooved decking installations where CAMO clips are being used.

One important point: CAMO specifically says to use a drill, not an impact driver, with ClipDRIVE. That matters because contractors are used to grabbing an impact for almost everything, but this system is designed around controlled driving of the clip screw.

Why I use a stand-up fastening tool

On a deck with hundreds of clips, every repetitive motion matters. A hidden fastener may only take a few seconds to drive, but bending down at every joist across every board adds up. ClipDRIVE is most useful on that repetitive field work.

It also pairs naturally with the CAMO LEVER. The LEVER can hold boards and clips in position, while ClipDRIVE handles the fastening. That combination is more useful to me than looking at either tool by itself.

What I like

  • Lets you fasten CAMO clips from a standing position.
  • Height-adjustable handle makes it easier to fit different crew members.
  • Weighted nose helps locate the clip screw.
  • Works as part of the same CAMO system as EDGE Clips and LEVER.
  • Useful on larger decks where clip installation is repeated hundreds of times.

Things to consider

  • It is a specialized tool. If you rarely install grooved decking, the value is harder to justify.
  • It is intended for CAMO Universal Deck Clips, not every clip system.
  • Use a drill, not an impact driver.
  • You still need to watch board alignment and clip position. Speed does not replace layout.

Who should buy ClipDRIVE?

Deck contractors: This is the strongest use case. The more grooved decking you install, the easier it is to justify a stand-up tool.

Large DIY projects: It can be worth considering if you are building a full deck and using CAMO clips throughout.

Small repairs: Driving a handful of clips by hand is usually simpler.

My contractor take

ClipDRIVE is not the kind of tool I would buy just because it looks faster in a demo. I like it because the job it solves is repetitive and physically annoying. When you are installing a full field of grooved decking, staying upright for more of the fastening process is a real workflow improvement.
