Contractor note: I use CAMO tools regularly on deck projects. This guide focuses on the CAMO products I actually keep in the deck-installation workflow, what each one is designed to do, and where the system makes the most sense for professional composite and PVC deck installation.

Evaluation basis

When this article says a product was installed, used on jobs or tested, that statement refers to firsthand experience. If we do not explicitly make one of those claims, the product-specific evaluation is research-based using current manufacturer documentation, installation requirements, warranty terms and contractor context.

What we compare: use-case fit, installation, durability and maintenance, warranty and support, availability and value.

For grooved decking, the three CAMO products that work together especially well are the LEVER board bending and locking tool, the ClipDRIVE stand-up fastening tool, and CAMO Universal Deck Clips. Instead of treating them as three unrelated products, it makes more sense to look at them as one installation system.

Quick verdict

If you install a lot of grooved composite or PVC decking, the CAMO system is worth understanding. The LEVER helps bring boards into position and hold rows in place, the clips create the hidden fastening connection, and the ClipDRIVE lets you fasten the clips while standing instead of working on your knees for every screw.

CAMO LEVER: the board-positioning tool

The CAMO LEVER is a board bending and locking tool. Its job is simple: help move a board into the position you want and hold it there while you fasten. That matters because even premium deck boards can need persuasion when you are trying to keep a long run straight and maintain clean spacing.

CAMO says the LEVER can lock rows of boards and clips before fastening, straighten warped boards, and adjust to wood or metal joists from roughly 1-1/2 to 3 inches wide. The handle locks the tool in one turn, so the idea is to position the board, apply pressure and free your hands for fastening.

For a professional deck crew, the biggest value is not that it replaces every other board-straightening trick. It is that it gives you a repeatable tool for controlling boards instead of improvising with pry bars, blocks or a second person every time a board fights you.

Where I would use it

  • Pulling a bowed or warped board into alignment.
  • Holding multiple grooved boards and clips in place before fastening.
  • Long deck runs where small alignment problems become more obvious as the field grows.
  • Composite and PVC installations where consistent spacing and clean lines matter.

CAMO ClipDRIVE: fastening without living on your knees

The ClipDRIVE is designed specifically for CAMO Universal Deck Clips. Instead of crouching over every joist to drive the clip screw, the tool lets you work from a standing position. For anyone installing decking all day, that is a meaningful change in workflow.

According to CAMO, ClipDRIVE has a height-adjustable handle, a weighted nose to help target the screw head, and a no-mar nose intended to reduce scuffs on the board. It attaches to a drill, and CAMO specifically says it is not intended for use with an impact driver. A T-15 driver bit is included with the tool.

For contractors, the main question is not whether a stand-up fastening tool looks impressive. It is whether it helps keep the crew moving. On repetitive field-board installation, that is exactly where a tool like ClipDRIVE makes the most sense.

What to know before buying

  • It is designed around CAMO Universal Deck Clips.
  • You need a drill rather than an impact driver.
  • It is most useful when you install enough grooved decking to benefit from a dedicated system.
  • It works best as part of the full workflow with clips and board-positioning tools rather than as an isolated purchase.

CAMO EDGE Universal Deck Clips

CAMO EDGE Clips are one version of the company’s Universal Deck Clip system. They are designed for 90-degree deck-board patterns over wood joists and create a hidden-fastener surface on grooved decking.

CAMO lists a 3/16-inch board spacing for EDGE Clips. The clip is designed to stay positioned on the joist until it is fastened, and it can be driven with the included guide or with CAMO’s stand-up tools. CAMO also warrants its Universal Deck Clips for use with major grooved decking brands including Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Deckorators and others.

One important detail: EDGE is not the only CAMO clip. If you are doing diagonal, herringbone or other layouts, CAMO has other current clip options such as WEDGECLIP or WEDGEMETAL. Match the clip to the deck pattern and framing instead of assuming one clip handles every layout.

How the three tools work together

  1. Set the grooved deck boards and clips across the joists.
  2. Use the LEVER to pull difficult boards into alignment and lock rows in place.
  3. Use ClipDRIVE to fasten the clips while standing.
  4. Continue checking board alignment, picture-frame details and spacing as the field progresses.

This is the part of the CAMO system that makes the most sense to me as a contractor: each tool solves a different part of the same installation problem. The LEVER controls the board, the clip creates the hidden connection, and ClipDRIVE speeds up the repetitive fastening.

Pros

  • Designed as an integrated system rather than unrelated accessories.
  • Hidden fastening keeps the face of grooved boards clean.
  • LEVER gives the installer more control over difficult boards.
  • ClipDRIVE reduces the amount of bending and kneeling during repetitive fastening.
  • CAMO supports the system across many major composite and PVC decking brands.

Things to consider

  • The full system costs more upfront than simply driving clips by hand.
  • ClipDRIVE is a specialized tool, so it makes more financial sense for installers who build decks regularly.
  • Clip selection matters. EDGE Clips are intended for 90-degree patterns on wood joists; other layouts may call for a different CAMO clip.
  • ClipDRIVE uses a drill, not an impact driver.
  • No fastening system replaces good framing, proper joist spacing and careful layout.

Who should consider the CAMO system?

Professional deck builders: This is where the system has the clearest case. If your crew installs grooved composite or PVC decking repeatedly, small time savings on every joist and every board add up.

Serious DIY deck builders: The clips themselves can make sense on a single project. Whether the LEVER and ClipDRIVE are worth buying depends on the deck size, how difficult the boards are to control, and whether you expect to build more decks later.

Occasional repair work: If you are replacing only a few boards, a full stand-up fastening system is probably unnecessary.

Individual CAMO reviews

My contractor take

I use a lot of CAMO tools because they are built around the actual sequence of installing decking. The important part is choosing the right CAMO component for the job instead of buying the name and assuming every clip or tool is interchangeable.

For a typical grooved composite or PVC field installation, the LEVER + Universal Deck Clips + ClipDRIVE combination is the CAMO setup I would look at first. I will continue updating this review with jobsite photos and longer-term notes as I use the tools on more projects.
