Composite decking is low maintenance, but low maintenance does not mean impossible to scratch. Furniture, grills, planters, construction debris, pets and abrasive dirt can mark outdoor surfaces. How visible those marks are depends heavily on the product’s texture, color and finish.

Do all composite boards scratch the same way?

No. Product lines use different cap materials, embossing patterns and finishes. A mark that stands out on a dark, uniform board may be much less noticeable on a board with stronger color variation and texture. This is one reason we recommend handling real samples before ordering.

Common causes of scratches

  • Dragging patio furniture instead of lifting it
  • Metal furniture feet without protective pads
  • Grills or heavy planters being moved across the surface
  • Sand and grit trapped under furniture
  • Pet claws and high-traffic areas
  • Construction tools and debris during installation

Can scratches be repaired?

Repair recommendations vary by manufacturer and product. Do not sand, heat, coat or aggressively alter a capped board unless the manufacturer specifically approves that method. An attempted repair can make the area more visible or affect the finish and warranty.

How to reduce visible wear

  • Use outdoor furniture pads that are appropriate for the surface.
  • Lift heavy items instead of dragging them.
  • Keep abrasive dirt and sand from accumulating.
  • Use manufacturer-approved cleaning methods.
  • Keep spare boards from the original installation when practical.

Test samples before you buy

Look at samples outdoors, not only under showroom lighting. Compare dark and light colors, texture and how small marks show. Dog owners should also read our decking for dogs guide. For broader brand comparisons, see our best composite decking brands guide.
